Importance

The two leading causes of death in the world as of 2016 according to the World Health Organization (WHO) is Ischaemic Heart Disease and Stroke with Diabetes coming in at 7th. The study can be found here. It has been shown that exercise can prevent strokeheart diseases and diabetes. However, there is not a good way to monitor your heart and activity level.

Our goal is to address this major problem with a device that can monitor an individuals activity level and heart with an x, y and z-axis accelerometer, electrocardiogram (ECG) signal and seismocardiogram (SCG) signal. This device will make a step towards long term heart and activity level monitoring through the continuous collection of these signals.

The Idea Behind the Device

On the left you can see typical medical devices and how rigid, bulky and obstructive they are. These would be impossible to wear throughout an individuals normal life.

On the right you can see an ordinary temporary tattoo sticker. It is soft, thin and lightweight, the ideal characteristics we want our monitors to have.

Thus, we merged these two modalities to create our device.
